Central Ohio residents can receive one-to-one computer training in their homes beginning this week -- with a pinch of Christian mentoring thrown in for good measure.
In addition to offering get-help-at-home technical expertise, Computer Moms' certified trainers want "to teach parents how to be responsible about their kids and their children's friends,'' franchise owner Bill Spohn said.
Depending on a client's needs and knowledge level, the Trabue Road resident said, Computer Moms trainers might offer "personal advice about protection from Web predators and online pornography,'' he said.
"We expect to build relationships that go beyond technical training.''
The moms in Computer Moms stands for Mentors on the Move.
"I wanted to build a company that had a strong value base,'' said Spohn, who was attracted to Computer Moms in part because its leaders are active in Christian organizations.
At the technical level, the company typically helps computer users with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and more specialized software such as QuickBooks and ACT!
The business also will install and support wireless networks and provide outsourced IT support for small businesses.
Spohn was a senior vice president at Franklin International, an adhesives and coatings company in Columbus, when he decided it was time for a big change.
"I was at a point in my life and career where it was time to move on,'' he said. "I had just turned 50. Fifty was a point where I figured I still had enough years left to make it happen.''
When the entrepreneur bought the Computer Moms territories, it made him the system's largest franchisee.
About 70 such franchises -- based in Austin, Texas, since 1994 -- operate across the country.
Trainers from Computer Moms typically assess a learner's computer skills before planning a program around the individual's needs, Spohn said.
The initial assessment is free.
